Subject: Perfect recording.
Subject: Perfect recording.
Of course, with Jason's passing, I'm going through my collection and reminiscing.
I was at this show that night. Third Floor was more or less a large room next to this guy's apartment. A little stage with Christmas tree lights above it. Some couches. Ashtrays. BYOB. Early Day Miners opened, plus two NC bands, Red Admirals and Black Socks, I think. Something like that.
To say it was an intimate show really doesn't explain just how personal it was. Maybe 50 people, tops, could fit in that room. Jason's set was just like as you can imagine. Him and his guitar. The sound was beautiful, and I was so happy to get such a clear copy of this show a couple years after. This is the same version. It is shocking how well it came out, because it was just Jason and a microphone and his little amp. And his metronome, which you can hear a few tracks in.
The bit about the cell phone ringing 'every fucking night' came from the show the very night before, where someone's phone interrupted another very quiet moment. You can even hear my girlfriend at the time and I laughing. This was that quiet and still of a show. You could hear a pin drop, and I think the recording completely captures that feeling.
FYI, that previous night's show was at macrock, in Virginia. The fire marshal ended up kicking people out of the venue due to overcrowding...
...so Jason played the rest of his set on the courthouse steps across the street. 'Ring the Bell' was never a more perfect song than that one moment. Especially with Jason smirking while singing 'they're always close...' just as the police were pulling up.
I will miss Jason and his music so much.
***************
Edit: Thanks so much for recording this. I've had this for years (perhaps you are the one who originally sent it to me on CD way back in the day?) It's one of my most treasured memories.

Aud: TCD-D8 Sony DAT Recorder with Oade pre-amp mod > Oade mics > Cubase (via SPDIF for mastering) > FLAC
There was a couch up front. I sat right in front of Jason. Fantastic show.
